Farmhouse Style Bedding & simple steps for styling your bed

I am by no means an expert on how to style a bed but wanted to share a few simple tips for styling your bed that work for me.  I recently gave my bed a makeover with Farmhouse Style Bedding and loving how it turned out. To be honest, my loving husband makes the bed most of the time, maybe I should have him write this post, hint hint.

The only thing missing to complete my Farmhouse Style Bedding makeover is a large light pink Merino chunky knit wool blanket for the end of the bed.  You know the ones I’m talking about? I’m sure you do!  I’ve watched a few tutorials on how to make them yourself and it’s something I “might” be brave enough to attempt.

For as long as I can remember I have always used a Duvet Cover, Quilt, Coverlet and 7 pillows. Using these pieces I am able to switch up the look and in the winter time, I will throw on an extra duvet to make it extra full.   I would love to have even more pillows, but I don’t want to press my luck.

Many of you will instantly recognize the gray quilt set and for those that have it, you know that it is worth EVERY.SINGLE.PENNY!  Not only is it a heavy quilt, the quality is exceptional!  It was more than my budget allowed, but I needed this in my life.  I started off with $100 and flipped furniture that I purchased on Craigslist and Offer Up.  Not only was I able to get this for my room, but I was also able to purchase the set in cream for my daughter’s Farmhouse Bedroom Makeover.   If there’s a will, I will find a way to make to make it happen, even if it meant getting up at 4am to paint before I headed off to work.

In the above and below picture you can see where I have the white coverlet that is laying over the sheets with the matching shams. I then layered the ruffle duvet and gray quilt.  Our bed in a queen, however, the coverlet is king size.

Now using the same pieces of my Farmhouse Style Bedding,  I am able to switch it up by laying the gray quilt over the bed and folding the duvet in half and moving it to end of the bed.  The Duvet cover is Voile and very thin. One thing to make sure of is to have a white duvet inside.  I also moved the gray pillows to the center.  Notice the dropcloth curtains?  Love them!

What you can’t see in the pics is the 8×10 gray Maui Jute Rug that goes under a portion of the bed. I love this rug so much that I have the same one in my family room in the Natural color.

Can we just talk about this bed frame for a minute?  Another Craigslist treasure!  Originally Mahogany that I painted General Finishes Lamp Black. It is a 4 poster bed,  that came with large posts as well as small ones. I prefer the simplicity of the smaller posts.  General Finishes Milk paint is great, especially if you have never painted furniture before.  It’s very easy to use.

The sign above my bed is very special to me.  Last year my husband wrote this on our anniversary card.  I had it custom made by a very talented local woman Sunny from Pickens & Pallets

Our nightstands are actually small vintage dressers.  Since our bed sits fairly high I wanted something a little more substantial in size.  Can you believe that it used to be teal in color?  I painted it with Country Chic All-In-One Decor paint in Simplicity  It is a clay-based primer and paint.  It is quite thick, stirring often is a necessity.

Candlesticks-Pottery Barn. 15 years old that I painted and distressed.  World Market carries some great ones that I have in my daughter’s room.  Gray Wood Pillar, White Wood Pillar, and Natural Wood Pillar.

Drop Cloth Curtains-Amazon.  I purchased a 9’x12′ drop cloth and cut it in half so it was 4.5’x12′.  I then let it soak in bleach water the bathtub all day to lighten it up.  If you have a top loading washing machine you can use that instead.  I draped 12″ of the top and then hung them with Curtain clips.

Paint color is Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. This is not a true representation of the color as I had to edit the pics.  You can see what it looks like here in this small bathroom
