Boys Minimalist Bedroom Reveal

With my youngest son turning 13 I figured it was time to give his room a little update.  He has the smallest room in the house and although a twin bed would fit the space better it just isn’t ideal, not to mention bed placement is a little tricky with a full size bed.  This bed has been placed every way possible including in front of the window, but this time around he asked if he could have a “walkway” into his room.

Here is the mood board I came up with to help me visualize how I wanted the room to look

Lets take a look at the before (honestly this is the layout I prefer)

The first thing I did was change the wall paint from SW Repose Gray to Alabaster.  The majority of our home in painted in SW Alabaster. It’s a nice creamy white and actually looks white until you compare it a true white.

The next thing was to revamp this Ikea Hemnes dresser with paint and new hardware.  I found this dresser on Craigslist 11 years ago.  I wanted to give his room a Minimalist/Mid Century Modern look without breaking the bank.  There were plenty of new dressers I found that would have looked amazing, however this one is functional and has deep drawers.  I first painted it Dunn & Edwards Black Spruce, but had SW color match it for me.

Once that was dry I added the new hardware and it still didn’t have the vibe I was going for.  I took the top off and ran the back and sides through the table saw so it was flush with the dresser (if you plan to do this, cut it down before painting).

The rug was the hardest for me to decide on.  I made approximately 30 design boards with different rugs, but one thing kept bringing me back to this Loloi Rug.  I have one in my bedroom and I just love it.  This rug has grays, black and greens and really ties this space together, plus it’s a rug I could use in another part of the house as it’s not room/décor specific.

Here is an unfiltered look

I love Fiddle Leaf Figs, however, cannot keep one alive to safe my life.  So, the one you see here is the infamous $50 QVC fig. I have books underneath to add height.

For his bedding I wanted something simple since the rug has so much going on.  All of it is from Target.  The duvet and striped sheet set are Hearth and Hand

I then painted the closet doors black to match the rest of the interior doors (I still need to add the hardware)

I do love the clean mature look this room now has. Don’t be fooled by the before pictures, it never looked that tidy!
