This is not your ordinary Guest Bedroom, technically is not a guest bedroom at all! Let’s take a look back….
This was the formal dining room and a waste of space.
Three children in a three-bedroom home meant the boys had to share a room and as the boys got older they needed their own space and converting the formal dining room was the most logical choice. This was accomplished by building a wall between the rooms and adding ship lap. The most recent update to her room can be found here.
Four years ago she moved out for college and the room has remained the same. Now it’s time for an update!!
To be completely honest with you I started this project at the beginning of March 2020 by ripping out the carpets. Then Covid-19 hit and we were unsure what our employment would look like so the room was put on hold. I had already ordered a new bed frame mattress and painted a portion of the plywood floors so when looking into the room it didn’t look so bad….. In August of 2020, the floors that match the rest of the downstairs were finally installed.
The dresser you see below was a free Craigslist find that I refurbished. The art ledge is an easy $10 DIY
SW Alabaster is the color you will find in the majority of my home and I wanted to stay fairly consistent with the look of our home and not deviate too far from this, so I could not do anything too crazy. I wanted to add a little moody-ness and decided to paint the wainscotting, door, and all trim Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal. (I had Sherwin Williams mix it up)
The first thing I did was replace the “fake” shiplap that I installed years ago. This was 1/4 plywood underlayment ($15 for 4’x8′ sheet) and ripped it into 5″ strips. Now Home Depot has Nickel Gap Shiplap by Pac-trim. The total cost was $106.00 ($5.60 for an 8′ section) I purchased the 8′ sections and cut to 90″.
I was in a hurry to get this installed and did not think this through very well! The nickel gap that shows in between each board should have painted before installation.
In designing a room I always start with the rug first. Loloi has many different rug lines from affordable to break the bank! The ones I have are very low pile and have a screen print design and affordable!
Shopping for rugs can be daunting. It is IMPORTANT to remember that several online retailers sell Loloi, and they “re-name” them. I find Overstock to be the most affordable and re-named “Alexander Home Rug”. I purchased the 7’6 x 9’6 here.
After I received the rug I sent Hacker Home pictures of the rug along with the paint color and my ideas for the room. In return, they sent me a few design ideas.
I have two other rooms in my home outfitted with Hackner Home Pillow Covers that you can see here and here
